Some common uses for the essential oil substitutes chart:

  • If you don't have a particular oil in stock – there's nothing worse than life throwing you a curve ball, turning to your trusted oils for support and... not having the oil you need to hand. Simply check the chart for a list of potential substitutes that you might have available
  • Saving money by using alternatives to expensive oils – some oils and absolutes can be pricey! If money is a bit tight or you would rather buy several oils vs one expensive oil, check the chart for alternatives based on aroma or therapeutic use
  • Improve your blending – if you've stumbled across a sublime blend but it doesn't quite fit your oil collection, learn which oils might be good substitutes for the ones you don't have and blend away!

Note: Recommended substitutes are listed for aroma or desired area of therapeutic use.

Important: Due to restrictions around medicinal claims applicable to essential oil brands, we've had to edit the therapeutic essential oil substitutes and unfortunately we can't be too specific about certain properties or uses. Think of the property or therapeutic use of the oil you want to find a substitute for, match this as closely to the substitute oils as possible then conduct further reading to confirm the most appropriate substitute for your therapeutic needs.

This chart will point you in the right direction to narrow down your search to a handful of oils, where you can conduct further research into recommended substitute oils and identify the right therapeutic use or property you are looking for.

ALWAYS check the safety precautions associated with any oil or substitute you plan to use. We do not promote internal use of essential oils and you should check with a qualified aromatherapist or medical professional for individual or specific advice.
