Learn More About Frankincense Essential Oil

The frankincense tree grows in extremely hot and harsh conditions. The tree likes to grow on craggy outcrops and has many gnarled branches, often housing venomous snakes. Harvesting of frankincense can be a treacherous job!

There are around 25 different species of frankincense, however not all manufacture resin that can be made into essential oil.

In summer, under the fierce sun, the tree’s inherent sap softens and oozes through the bark. Harvesters slash the bark of the tree to allow the milky sap to pour out in “tears”.  This is left to dry until early winter, when it is exported around the world.

Recent research has shown that an active constituent in frankincense resin, boswellic acid, is effective against tumours in test tube and animal experiments. However, boswellic acid is a very large molecule and does not pass through distillation, so is not present in the essential oil.

Emotional And Energetic Properties Of Frankincense Essential Oil

Of every fragrance on mother Earth, frankincense must surely be the most enigmatic. Very few plants have a more distinguished history than frankincense.

You might recognise its name from the story of the Nativity, however its usage is far, far older. Frankincense forms a vital part of most religious rituals of the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Middle East.

Interestingly, German researchers from Leipzig University reveal that when frankincense resin is burned, it activates the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol. This molecule, famously found in cannabis, adheres to the psychoactive CB1 receptor which also modulates cognition, memory, appetite, pain, itching and nausea.

It is likely that this CB1 activation by frankincense helps you to enter a trancelike meditative state, removing the boundaries of the physical and mental bodies, helping you to connect with the divine.

Further, frankincense could help you when trying to slow your breath.

Breathing, of course, forms a vital part of meditation, and is quintessential for changing brain waves from busy alpha to meditative theta state.

Breathing, not only has an incredibly important function to our everyday life, it has a mental and spiritual significance.

We take our first breaths, the moment we manifest on this earth, and our final breath signifies the moment we leave it.

Deep breath is how we fully incarnate our spirit. When people can’t breathe, and take very fast, shallow breaths, it results in anxiety and panic like states. Our breathing is usually also affected when we are feeling anxious or down.

When we are sad, we sigh.

But conversely, a sigh will also accompany bliss, for deep breath is how our body manifests satisfaction.

Essential oils do not have side effects, only many main effects and with this ability to breathe more deeply, comes a deep calm, a feeling of warming comfort, and profound sense of relief.

Frankincense is ruled by the sun.  Think of how it forms and softens underneath the burning star.

It is strengthening and fortifying but also regal and select. It builds courage, and happiness and of course, warms the body. It’s in tune with the ego, and the quintessential essence of a person.

Think of how your star sign in astrology dictates what your overarching personality will be like. We can use frankincense to help get to the essence of who we were, before life influenced us.

Frankincense is creative in nature. This makes it an incredibly powerful oil for people who have become cynical or have let creativity fall by the wayside because people told them it was a waste of their time, or they have felt they simply weren’t as good as other people at it.

Where most essential oils have some kind of theme, frankincense has two.

  1. It restores elasticity.
  2. It relinquishes control.

In some ways, the two are the same.

We think of how our personalities have an elastic nature.

With help, they can spring back to where they were, before they were pulled in a different direction such as by external pressures of society.

Frankincense essential oil is a very useful choice for people who are perfectionists, struggle to relinquish control and refuse to leave nothing to chance.

These people are often prone to nervous burnout.

You’ll find, while they’re not bi-polar, they have this incredible up and down, and up and down, nature to their moods.

Their ups are frenetic and full of energy, but their downs can be extremely melancholy, dark, and destructive, and of course their physical body simply can’t take the pace.

Immunity drops, and we see a spiral in health, completely derived from this mental push, push, push that they do to themselves.

While frankincense would not be immediately considered as an immune boosting essential oil, we can see how, for these people, it could bring about a radical change.

Often these people struggle to sleep.

They don’t know how to switch off, and their brains – while not worrying, frets about things they have to do, things they have to research, things they have to find out…

Frankincense helps us to connect with the divine.

For those who cannot be kind to themselves, perhaps higher energy needs to step in. Frankincense very quietly opens the door to higher source.

Very importantly, it is associated with the Crown chakra.

Frankincense is a wonderful oil for people who overstretch.

It restores elasticity. We are mainly talking about emotionally and spiritually but aromatherapists and massage therapists might also look to use it on tight muscles (diluted with a carrier).

Skin too, delights in being treated to frankincense oil. The ancient Egyptians soaked frankincense resin in oil and used it to embalm their mummies. It has incredibly preservative properties. As such, it is often a fundamental choice for face creams for wrinkles.

Our Commitment to Quality

Every batch of Frankincense oil we receive is tested for purity and quality. Each batch of essential oil can differ, even from the same producer. Because essential oil is extracted from plants, it can be affected by many factors such as the weather, the seasons, and human error… a bit like fine wine.

This is why we carry out batch testing even if the batch is from the same supplier so we can guarantee consistent quality.

The farms we’ve chosen to work with consistently provide incredibly pure, high quality oils. We regularly review our producers with a stringent set of quality guidelines that we’ve developed in partnership with our industry experts and their 20+ years in the industry.

“Even an oil which is quite truthfully described as pure may be of poor quality, and therefore of less value  therapeutically.  IF AN ESSENTIAL OIL COSTS MUCH LESS THAN YOU WOULD NORMALLY EXPECT  TO PAY FOR IT, the oil may well be a third or fourth distillate from a batch of plant material which has already yielded the greater part of its properties to the first or second distillation.”

About The Cultivation

Our mission is to provide you with the purest essential oils that contain the therapeutic properties you need to support yours and your family’s health.

Sometimes this means the oil is certified organic but acquiring an organic certification can be quite costly to farmers, which means many choose not to obtain it. Oils derived from plants that are organically grown or wildcrafted are still free from man-made chemicals despite not being certified. This means the oils can be of equal or better quality than comparable certified organic products and often at a lower price.

We also look to source single origin essential oils to help ensure quality and transparency.

How We Package Our Frankincense Oil

Our Frankincense oil is fresh off the still and comes in a 10ML blue glass bottle and is sealed to protect the precious oil within. The bottle also comes with an orifice reducer built in so you can dispense the oil one drop at a time.

During the shipping process, special canisters prolong and protect the quality of the oil from light and temperature during transit from around the globe and we ensure a quick turnaround time from producer to bottle, with minimal shelf time to maintain quality and purity.

We typically recommend storing your oil at or below room temperature in a cool dark place.

.

The Tests We Run on our Oils To Ensure Quality

All of our oil is constantly tested for purity. The testing provides us with key data about what constituent compounds are in the oils and at what volumes.

Gas Chromatography (GC)

Gas Chromatography (GC) describes the analytical separation technique used to analyze volatile substances in the gas phase. In GC, the components of a sample are dissolved in a solvent and vaporized in order to separate the analytes by distributing the sample between two phases: a stationary phase and a mobile phase. GC provides us key data about what compounds are in oils and how much of each component is present.

Mass Spectrometry (MS)

Mass Spectrometry (MS) is an analytical chemistry technique that identifies the amount and type of individual molecules present in a sample by measuring the mass-to-charge ratio. A mass spectrometer has three essential functions:  Ion source, Mass analyzer and the Detector. The Ion source is where the sample is ionized. Once the sample is ionized, the mass analyzer sorts and separates the ions according to the mass and charge. Once the ions are separated and sorted then the separation is measured in the detector where a results chart is displayed..

Recipes

Tranquillity Diffuser Blend:
1 drop Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii)
1 drop Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
1 drop Myrrh essential oil (Commiphora myrrha)

Nefertiti’s Body Butter:
In Egypt, carvings still remain of Nefertiti surrounded by bags of frankincense and myrrh imported from the legendary Land of Punt. Famously, she was also a devotee of Shea butter. Nefertiti, of course, would have used infused plant materials rather than essential oils.

4 fluid ounces of cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao)
4 fluid ounces of Shea butter (Vitellaria paradoxa)
1 tablespoon wheat germ carrier oil (Triticum vulgare)
10 drops frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii)
5 drops rose absolute (Rosa Damascena)
3 drops myrrh essential oil (Commiphora myrrha)

Method of preparation:
– Wash and sterilize 2 x 4oz jars. Place in a warm oven (120 degrees), face down on the shelves, to dry. Leave to sterilise for fifteen minutes
– Gently melt the cocoa and Shea butters together in a bain-marie double boiler. If you do not possess a bain-marie, then simply place them into a bowl placed over boiling water.
– When fully melted, add the wheatgerm and essential oils.
– Decant into jars and leave to cool uncovered.
– Store in the refrigerator and your body butter will keep for up to six weeks.
