Introduction to Chakra Healing

Energy runs through everything in life. It’s a basic tenet of physics.

Getting to know your own energy source - your chakras - brings you an intimate connection with how your body acts and reacts to stress, while also helping you gain insights into how to heal traumas and patterns you may have been carrying around with you your entire lifetime.

Getting to grips with healing and balancing your chakras on the simplest level, will enable you to heal both your emotional and physical self.

Those who dedicate their lives to accessing chakra energy might become known as a healer or shaman or even ascend via master learning to access other dimensions, stepping in and out of time.

Advanced work requires diligent meditation, but tools such as essential oils, sound, crystals and yoga can help balance the chakras of the physical body.

As part of this post, we'll cover specific chakra balancing techniques for each chakra.

Essential oils are recommended as part of chakra healing, whether used alone, in blends or in combination with yoga, affirmations and other treatments.

Also interesting is the changes of vibration that crystals can lend to essential oil blends.

The changes, although small, are a bit like putting an extra coat of nail varnish on! It seems to deepen and strengthen the effects somehow. For this reason, the blends listed in the chakra healing sections include gemstones.

Don’t feel you have to emulate them exactly. For example, if you don’t have a ruby to hand for your root chakra (what? Sort that man out girl, everyone should have a ruby, at the very least!) feel free to substitute with another root chakra gem.

Usually these are red, but not always.. or you can miss it out completely. No recipes are set in... err.. 'stone' (see what I did there?).

What are Chakras?

“Chakra” is a Sanskrit word which literally translates to “Wheel” or “Vortex”.

The chakras, themselves, are wheels of energy running through the aura and into the physical body. Whilst we cannot see these, they are easy to detect with a pendulum and we’ll address that later in the article.

The aura is made up of seven layers or bodies, which can be easily seen as colours (with practice).

The first layer, our physical body, can of course be easily seen by all. The outer ones emanate from it as the etheric bodies – two emotional layers, two mental and two spiritual - the main seven.

It acts as a protective layer for the body and functions as a barometer for the emotions.

Permeating through the aura, into the physical body, the chakras run the length of the spine, from bottom to top, then out through the head too.

Seemingly they transmit information from the spirit, through the mental and emotional bodies, into the physical corpus, then return communication from the organs back to the spirit via the layers of the aura.

The soul and spirit are different and reside separately.

The soul, believed to be your timeless light, incarnated through many lifetimes, is thought to live in chakra 8.

In contrast, the spirit, that which is quintessentially “you” is thought to reside within the aura.

There is a beautiful shamanic teaching that describes the relationship between the soul and the spirit.

Consider the soul to be like a carpenter who makes a chair, but then throws it in the fire to burn.

The carpenter feels no pain at the chairs demise because it's easy for him to make another.

The soul feels the same way as the spirit reaches the end of its lifetime.

Another incarnation will soon arrive.

In Tantra, especially, chakras are depicted like flowers with many petals. The more petals a chakra is deemed to have, the higher and lighter its vibration.

Within Tantric iconography, there hides many secrets about the chakras, which can tell us great truths about the spiritual journey. As the article unfolds, we'll analyse not only the modern-day wisdom about each one, but also the noble truth hidden within the petals.

One such recent acquisition to our more modern understanding of the system is the discovery that each chakra seems to correspond to its own endocrine organ, and indeed to “hubs” of neurological energy in the body.

Opening and closing, like clockwise spinning vortices, the chakras seem to vitalise the physical body by “charging” the glands to produce and distribute hormones throughout the body.

A personal tale from Liz, who's worked with the chakras for over twenty years:

"I’ve always seen extraordinary results from them, but even to me they seemed mysterious and difficult to explain, until in 2012 I read the following words by Dr Candace Pert, a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and the person who discovered the opioid receptor to which morphine and other opioids bind:"

From Dr Candace Pert:

"Though many of these modalities had a basis in Eastern philosophy and other non-Western traditions, which as a Western-trained scientist I would not ordinarily have known anything about, I had in fact had a limited exposure to Eastern ideas that dated back to the mid-eighties during my NIH lab days.

Because of the growing public awareness of my research on endorphins and other neuropeptides, people from all kinds of unexpected backgrounds had sought me out at the time. A bearded yogi dressed in white and wearing a turban showed up at my office one day to ask me if endorphins were concentrated along the spine in a way that corresponded to the Hindu chakras.

The chakras, he explained, were centres of “subtle energy” that governed basic physical and metaphysical functions from sexuality to higher consciousness.

I had no idea what he was talking about, but, trying to be helpful, I pulled out a diagram that depicted how there were two chains of nerve bundles located on either side of the spinal cord, each rich with many of the information-carrying peptides.

He placed his own chakra map over my drawing and together we saw how the two systems overlapped.1"

Thinking back, it had the same shocking effect on me as historic news events. The very fabric of time seemed to stand still for me when I read it.

Finally!

A scientist.

A truly important and respected scientist…, someone so deeply ensconced in orthodox medicine she’d played a part in the Nobel Prize winning discovery of endorphins…was explaining their existence and function."

Function and Dysfunction of the Chakras

Clearly, to vitalise the body the chakras must work effectively, but commonly they can begin to wane.

Oftentimes their energy will become too weak.

Sometimes they jam shut causing blocked chakras, which then means no energy can get through or just as likely, they can become overly energetic and seep out way too much energy.

As we look at each chakra in turn, it will become clear what that might look like, but the best example might be someone stricken by grief.

Their heart chakra jams open, so each time they go to a family gathering they might be able to muster some degree of enjoyment, but by the next day they are back in the doldrums again.

Because the heart chakra doesn’t close – and indeed vitalise the heart and lungs – the next day their heart aches again and they keep sighing and crying because the vault hasn’t had an opportunity to lock in and preserve the joy.

A chakra’s shape can also change from what should look like a fairly circular spiral to an ellipse if there is a distortion in its power. Further, Liz has even seen them move across the body.

As previously stated, they should emanate through the spine, protruding from front to back, “penetrating” the various vertebrae, but they can drift either side, meaning they are no longer in the most efficient place to sustain the organs.

What Causes Chakra Imbalance

It’s not entirely clear what disturbs them, but it seems to be emotional distress that can shock them open or cause blocked chakras.

According to Tantra, kundalini rests in the base chakra and snakes its way up, empowering each chakra in turn.

This, however, develops over childhood, and each year that passes – really until you are about 50 – the latent energy moves higher through conscious experience.

In effect, it takes around seven years for the power of each chakra to be properly assimilated.

On paper, that seems like big jumps, as if a child was moving from class one to class two, but that is not so.

It helps to think of a train coming through a tunnel.

The last carriages might still be in the root chakra, while the front ones are heading up to the sacral… The growth is continual but gradual.

Thus, if a trauma were to happen to a child in their first seven years, we are likely to see problems with the root chakra.

Potentially it will be too weak and we will see issues with security, but likewise it’s likely to affect how sturdily their creativity radiates from the power of the sacral too.

Understanding Chakra Imbalance

Please note: It’s very easy to read a post on the internet such as this, and/or to use charts to assess the possible issues and to form a conclusion that a solitary chakra is at fault.

This is very rarely so.

Later in the post, I’ll show you how to see exactly what is going on, but even working with a pendulum, the changes you see are subtle.

Think of the chakras as cone shaped. (They are not, but this is a good analogy to imagine how they work through time, and again we will think about time later in the post when we look at the outer chakras.)

Seen as a cone, the tip of the cone is where the chakra permeates the body (<), but the further away from the body we get, the more open the vortex (or cone in this visualisation) becomes.

So, even when we perceive the pendulum, the shape of the chakra is small.

The further away from the body it becomes, the density weakens but the energy diffuses wider.

Thus, if we could see the chakra at say the seventh body of the aura, it’s space would have become far bigger.

If we could work on the chakras in the seventh body, then potentially the chakra would be fairly large, and so shape distortions would be clearer to see. This would be difficult to do, not least because you would need to have extremely long arms to reach that high.

With that in mind then, consider that if the root chakra has been dysfunctional for a long time, kundalini struggles to climb with much vigour.

It’s a bit like a sapling in the forest straining to find the sun. It does grow but it will be weak, potentially very tall, but with little substance.

Larger trees not only take its light, but most of its nutrients too.

The forester needs to coppice. Cutting other trees down around it make an investment in its future.

What we find is, even if we have issues in the solar plexus chakra, for example, we need to “plug” the root.

We invest time and energy at all levels, because once we have 'concreted in' every space where energy can leak out, it builds a better reservoir generally.

It’s also useful to consider there will be a kind of 'push me - pull you' kind of politics going on.

When energy is leaking in one place, the organism tries to compensate in another. I’m convinced this is how chakras move out of balance, personally, but that may not be so.

But if the heart chakra gets shocked open, and it stays there, probably by grief, then the throat chakra tends to close up in defiance.

Is that why people go quiet when they’re grieving? Maybe so.

It’s not an exact science. Often five, six or seven chakras can be out of balance so there is a great deal of work to do.

Lastly, they are elastic. Even the best practitioner can heal and balance a chakra, even shove it back to where it is supposed to be along the spine, and attempt to anchor it, but they spring back. What’s more they will continue to spring back for months.

I’m not even sure why that is, but I suspect it might be something to do with the elasticity of the spine which is why I refer most of my own aromatherapy clients to chiropractors to get their backs checked when I am treating them long term.

All the energy of the body runs through the spinal cord, and of course our chakras run through it from front to back.

If the spine has been misaligned for a long time – and that is usual because even wearing your handbag on the same shoulder all the time can do it – then the muscles get used to it being there, even though it’s painful.

After manipulation, the spine will rarely remain straight for more than a matter of hours because the muscles and tendons pull it back. It will take weeks to train them to how the body is supposed to feel but eventually, the spine will comply, as will eventually, the chakras.

It’s worth also pointing out, at this point, that each nerve plexus passes up through the spine and then heads out to its corresponding organ.

Misalignment of vertebrae rub on nerves and can send pain signals down to an organ. Most conditions could see at least some improvement with chiropractic (yes, I know some of you will disagree but this is our opinion).

Might this explain chakra involvement? Does manipulation of the spine, around the solar plexus region improve digestion? Almost certainly, it could.

So, the two things in tandem, spinal work and chakra healing have an extremely strong relationship and are powerful allies.

So, this would seem to be a good place to have a good look at each chakra and how to heal it, in what we call the third dimension... Don’t worry about the dimensions, we’ll get to that in the outer chakras!

This would be the classic first seven chakras that most people work with.

Physical dysfunction of the Root Chakra

The root chakra is the lowest frequency of all the chakras.

Spinning slowest, means it is also the densest of them all and indeed it connects to those parts of the body that are solid and heavy; bones, nails and teeth, clearly, but also the large intestine, anus and prostate.

Problems with the root chakra often display as conditions of the elimination systems: the colon and bladder for instance, or prostate problems in men.

We might also see conditions concerning the anus and rectum, especially haemorrhoids.

Cramps and inflammation are common, as are eating disorders.

The immune system is indicated here so any type of auto-immune problem might point to some kind of root chakra problem.

Adrenal fatigue is often connected with this chakra.

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Root Chakra

Root chakra energy is pure adrenaline.

It is fight or flight. Connecting with the adrenal gland, it measures, processes and responds to fear.

Its corresponding glands, the adrenals, live atop the kidneys and secrete hormones and neurotransmitters in response to stress conditions.

The molecule of negative expectation - cortisol release - directly correlates to this area.

Short term, stress hormones have an anti-inflammatory nature, preserving all the body’s resources to be able to respond to the dangers it sees before it. But longer term, cortisol turns on its axis, becoming inflammatory and endangering the organism.

Its developmental stage is the first seven years, so we can see how a child who has been emotionally neglected or mistreated might start to develop issues here.

Trust issues about our family play out here, and since the lessons are about what we need to do to survive, so do money issues, and more dangerously food and eating habits.

A child learns much about how the world sees him/her, and indeed his or her place there too.

What’s the difference between a child who is told they can do anything, and one who is perpetually insulted and derailed? We’ll see how root chakra energy directly results in ambition or not.

What does that look like on a material level?

Clean house or disgusting hole?

Yep, we’re back at root chakra issues again!

Feeling grounded is vital to confidence and the impact you believe you can make in the world. If the energy here is too weak, then kundalini lacks the dynamism to force up to the sacral chakra of “I desire”. There is no climbing.

Even someone who previously had a healthy energy flow can see issues develop mainly because they are worried about security in some way.

Threats of redundancy, too many bills, husband leaving, house moves…all nibble away at the root chakra and can eventually cause issues in the physical body.

Likewise, of course, if you spend time in an abusive situation, or experience traumatic events, these dangerous circumstances will inevitably start to impact on your psyche and how safe you feel.

Clearly too, the nature of internal neurochemistry means you’re likely to feel anxious generally in life, even if it’s only one area impacting upon you.

Potentially this might be the easiest chakra to understand how this can happen, seeing the clear hormonal connection.

Root Chakra Balance Vs Imbalance

Root Chakra In Balance

A vibrant root chakra generates the sort of feelings of safety we all crave.

You feel safe amongst those around you, trusting they always have your back.

You feel confident you have everything you need not only to survive but to thrive.

You’ve got a strong sense of right and wrong. You pick your battles wisely and you’re assertive enough to state your case clearly and successfully if you feel you are being taken advantage of.

It’s a comfortable state.

You have a clear sense of who you are, your place in the world and what you are capable of achieving.

Root Chakra imbalance symptoms

Consider then, that the chakra is not opening enough, or indeed has endured such trauma in the past, that it is blocked. It’s completely shut down in self defence.

What do we see? Anxious, afraid or even terrified.

Withdrawn.

Frightened of life.

Avoiding it.

Can’t settle to anything.

Can’t hold down a job…(Notice how there is a sense of the wind being able to lift it because there is nothing weighing it down?)

Can’t put down roots – so obvious it’s daft but, absolutely right.

Hiding from life through any manner of substances, particularly alcohol and even more so drugs.

We can also see how a kid might get drawn easily into gang culture. They’ve no self-esteem, so they need the security of others to make them feel valued. There’s a complete lack of direction so they need others to lead them.

Insufficient activity at the base chakra is self-destructive behaviour. Period.

But, of course, different characters respond in different ways, and you can imagine a child being shouted at so long that eventually his chakra rages and screams so loud and powerfully that it never quite closes again.

What are they then?

Selfish, egocentric, self-centred, probably a bully and potentially the leader of that gang because their fear disguises itself behind a reckless façade of seeming to have no fear at all.

They’re adrenaline junkies. Some jump out of planes, others rob banks…on the extreme levels obviously.

We can all think of people who try to dominate us and press our buttons.

That’s an interesting relationship isn’t it? My root chakra versus your root chakra…

You push. Do I push back? Or do I become one of your sycophants who’s not brave enough to push anyone’s buttons unless someone else has given me permission…?

Over-active root chakras bring about material obsessions. Whatever it takes to get it, that’s ok with them.
It doesn’t matter who’s in the way, they’ll railroad them.

These people are certainly ambitious, but in particularly unpleasant ways. They are coercive, controlling and manipulative.

Where underactive, is probably stood on the diving board, scared to take the leap... over-active would be the pusher.

Root Chakra imbalance extremes summed up would be either frightened or exhibiting no fear at all.

Energetics of the Root Chakra

The red depicts the energetic and fiery nature of Shakti, awakening, moving, and evolving. But likewise, it is reminiscent of the sky at dawn as we rouse from sleeping, gain consciousness and become more aware.

The birth of human consciousness takes place here.

Each of the four petals of the lotus flower represents a certain central aspect of the psyche:

  • Manas (the mind)
  • Buddhi (our intellect)
  • Chitta (levels of consciousness)
  • Ahamkara ( the ego) are all seeded here

Other interpretations say the petals symbolise the goals of an immaculate life, the Hindu tenet of Purusartha.

These are:

  • Dharma (amoral and virtuous life)
  • Artha (attaining a life of purpose and meaning)
  • Kama (enjoying sensual and emotional pleasure and satisfaction)
  • Moksha (a life in pursuit of spiritual freedom and self awareness)

Geometrically, the four-sided square is a form that is stable and inert. But, four is very much a physical number on many levels: the four physical elements, the four points of the compass, the four seasons; all conveying our worldly dimension and physical form.

Importantly, within this, resides a triangle that points downwards representing how consciousness is seeded at the root chakra but then grows upwards and outwards, flourishing and filling the space.

The soul is drawn down from his home in chakra 8, is sucked down to the root chakra then is projected up with force through the body into the physical space. It manifests into a more tangible form as a person's potential.

Other disciplines also give a rather lovely elephant as the symbol of the root chakra - an elephant with seven trunks which depicts wisdom and stability.

Again, we can understand this on several levels.

Fundamentally, each trunk relates to a dhatu - the basic elements of Ayurveda.

These are:

  • Rasa dhatu (plasma)
  • Rakta dhatu (blood)
  • Mamsa dhatu (muscles)
  • Meda dhatu (fat)
  • Ashti dhatu (bone)
  • Majja dhatu (bone marrow)
  • Shukra dhatu (semen)

Esoterically, they also pertain to the seven levels of consciousness kundalini flows through at each stage of its assent:

  • Unconscious
  • Subconscious
  • Dream consciousness
  • Wakeful consciousness
  • Astral consciousness
  • Supreme consciousness
  • Cosmic consciousness

Clearly, too we could construe the seven trunks as portraying the seven inner chakras of the physical body.

How to Balance and Heal the Root Chakra

Root chakra meditation and yoga and very helpful here.

Hop onto YouTube and there are any number of binaural and isotonic recordings resonating at the frequency of the root chakra helping you to stabilise the energy and hopefully dispel fear.

Essential oils and crystals, in particular, are very useful for helping us feel a more tangible connection to what’s going on.

In truth though, if there is a very strong deficiency in this area, and the psychology ads up and you can see clear connections to treatment in your childhood, abuse or other traumatic experiences, your best aid is counselling.

There is very serious untangling of the psyche required and it needs a well-trained person to help you open doors which can be very cleverly shut tight for your own self defence.

Essential oils for The Root Chakra

That said, clearly there are varying degrees of issues.

If you just feel nervous or are worried you no longer seem to have a security blanket that stops you, vibrational healing is a superb aid, and it goes without saying how good an aid it is to those undergoing psychological care.

As one would imagine, essential oils focus on calming us and helping us feel safe. These (mentioned below) are great oils to choose if change awaits you and it feels terrifying.

They are reassuring and help us to gain some insights into what may have triggered these feelings of uncertainty.

Often, the feelings have nothing to do with the opportunity in hand, and everything to do with stuff that went wrong in the past.

If you hear yourself thinking “stop the world I want to get off,” these are your most powerful allies.

Oils are very clever at shining lights into the darkness and holding your hand while you stand there agog, wondering how such things could be manipulating you to such a massive degree.

Heavy note essential oils for the root chakra, like benzoin, vetiver and myrrh, stop the world rushing.

They anchor the energy at the root, and almost instantaneous help us feel calmer.

This is extremely useful in helping us feel what balance should feel like. From there we can focus our energies on re-enforcing this feeling over time.

Simultaneously, middle note essential oils for the root chakra, like helichrysum, clary sage and cistus, can coax our memories to come back into focus and assimilate the traumas and worries that may have caused this.

Safely, as they bring these into our consciousness, they give us courage to feel them, experience them in a more secure context and let them go.

Top note essential oils for the root chakra lift our spirits to help us feel more positive. Oils like spruce and fir say: "Look how I have grown because my roots are anchored. Let me show you how to feel that safe during the storms too."

Overwhelmingly, with oils for the base chakra they make us feel safer and as if we have more resilience.

Other essential oils for the root chakra you might like to try are:
Blue Cypress, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Spikenard, Angelica Root, Aniseed Myrtle, Balsam, Birch, Black Pepper, Buddha Wood, Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Galbanum, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper Berry, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Opopanax, Oregano, Palo Santo, Sandalwood, Turmeric, Wintergreen

Crystals to heal and Balance the Root Chakra

Bloodstone, Garnet, Red Agate, Red Aventurine, Red Jasper, Red Tiger’s Eye, Ruby, Red Jasper, Red Calcite, Cinnabar, Spinnel, Dravite Jet, Tiger Iron, Mookanite, Smokey Quartz, Septarian, Staurolite, Mahogony Obsidian, Meteorite.

Perhaps soak your crystals overnight in a glass of distilled, or even better spring water to create crystal elixirs. Drinking the beverage next morning really pours in the strange cosmic energy that the minerals have brought up from the ground.

Root Chakra Essential Oil Blends

General note on using essential oils and crystals together:

Place the crystal into the carrier oil and leave the blend to sit for around 20 minutes before use. If you have a bottle big enough, make a much larger amount of the mix and leave it bottled with the crystal to allow the charge to optimise and be ready next time you want to use it.

Alternatively, use the essential oil blend and simply place the oils, then the crystal onto the chakra and allow them to work in harmony.

“I Trust” Massage Oil

  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Seed Carrier Oil (Sesamum indicum)
  • Blood Stone Crystal
  • 1 drop Vetiver Essential Oil (Vetiveria zizanoides)
  • 1 drop Cistus Essential Oil (Cistus labdanum)
  • 1 drop Cedarwood virginian Essential Oil (Juniperus virginia)
  • Safety: Not suitable for use in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Leaving behind the Past Root Chakra Blend

  • 1 tablespoon Rosehip Carrier Oil (Rosa rugosa)
  • Garnet
  • 1 drop Benzoin Essential Oil (Styrax benzoin)
  • 2 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil (Helichrysum italicum)
  • 3 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil (Citrus paradisii)
  • Safety: Grapefruit essential oil is not advised for people on blood thinning medications or with platelet issues

Feeling in My Body Bath Oil

Stand in your strength with this fortifying bath oil. Blend your essential oils into a bit of milk to disperse them and then pop your crystal in the bath water with you. This blend makes a gorgeous massage oil too.

  • 1 tablespoon Milk
  • Carnelian
  • 1 drop Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)
  • 3 drops Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus recutica)
  • 2 drops Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale)

Root Chakra Affirmations

“I am safe” and “I am worthy” are the cornerstones of root chakra healing.

Some ideas for root chakra affirmations might be:

  • I am fearless
  • I am financially secure
  • I am grounded and have a connection to the Earth
  • I am worthy of love
  • I feel strong connection with mother earth
  • I am safe and secure
  • I am safe as the Earth spins

Meditation For the Root Chakra

Using your essential oil blend can really help bring your affirmations into focus.

Inhale your blend as you chant. Alternatively try lying down with your crystal over your root chakra.

Doing Kegels for women and using kegel eggs is spectacular for making you feel safe and toning this area.

In all cases, try hard to visualise red in the area, and pour in as much thought and intention into making it glow brighter and brighter, opening and closing larger with every pulsation.

Here's a root chakra meditation taken from YouTube that you might want to try:

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Sacral Chakra

Kundalini unfurls and snakes up from the root to the sacral centre, the seedings of desire.

While it will take seven years to completely develop at the root, it starts to reach up into the sacral by about two years old.

What’s happening then?

Baby is into everything. I want to taste that. I want to touch that. I want to look at this.

Poor old mom!!!

But how does mom respond?

I once heard an interview with Sir Richard Attenborough speaking about what his dad was like when he and Sir David were youngsters. He related how they were always so excited to tell him about things they had discovered, and he’d reply “That’s so interesting. I’d love to know more. Would you go to the library and find out some more for me please?”

So, excitedly they would go, hungry for knowledge, eager to please their father.

Clearly, the campaign was successful since he bred one of the finest actors of all time and arguably the greatest naturalist and broadcaster.

But, what if he’d said, “Don’t touch that.” “Leave it alone.”

More reminiscent of the dad in The Lego Movie and the Kragle (his tube of crazy glue he used to ensure his son didn’t take the pieces apart.)

What happens to the desire to learn, to create and be independent?

For the child who has very few cuddles, where is the desire to be touched?

Potentially the easiest way to think of sacral chakra energy is opulence and juiciness. It’s sensuality in all its forms. Loving beautiful paintings, devouring delicious meals, oozing sexuality.

It’s that urge to get up and face the day and make it something special.

Its tantric lotus symbol is orange the colour of awakening, action, stimulation and attraction, but orange is also the colour of the holy man’s robes. Monks and ascetics wear orange to signify the purity of their knowledge.

The chakra flower has six petals, an innately feminine number, for in it hides many cycles: 360 degrees, 60 seconds and minutes and the 12 months of the year. Secretly, it reveals the six emotions we must overcome to purify this chakra:

  1. Jealousy
  2. Hatred
  3. Anger
  4. Desire
  5. Cruelty
  6. Pride

Its element is water and it governs movement, animation and flow.

The concentric circles in the symbol inherently signify cycles but the moon too, has her own irresistible cycle that we would do well to perceive. For the cycles are endless. Life turns and turns, and we are invited to dive into the energy flow and to relish the excitement of the elation and frenzy of change.

Sacral Chakra Balance Vs Imbalance

Sacral Chakra In Balance

If you were to draw it, in all its sumptuous vibrance, the sacral chakra would look Bohemian, alluring, brightly coloured, bordering on wanton with sex on display.

Of course in our own lives, it’s represented with a balanced sex life where we know how to give, receive and experience ecstasy.

Likewise, we enjoy creative expression in whatever form, whether that’s cooking, and enjoying eating it, sewing and savouring the richness of the fabrics, gardening and being able to relax and soak up the fragrances in the garden.

Arguably, as a sensual art, aromatherapy could be described as being aligned most closely to the sacral chakra.

Sacral Chakra Imbalance Symptoms

The vitality of this chakra has a direct relationship to how sex was construed in your household when you were a child.

If you were raised in a puritanical home, where sex was spoken of in hushed tones, or was considered as something dirty, then there is almost certainly likely to be a weakness here.

On the other side, you can see promiscuity, sex addictions, lascivious behaviour and over-indulgence in all its forms.

Flipping it over again, maybe we see frigidity or fear of sex. Secrets hidden and again, possibly eating disorders arising from self-hatred and repression.

The hardest lesson to learn, for someone with issues with the sacral chakra, is that there is more to life than surviving, that marriages should be enjoyed, and to give themselves permission to enjoy pleasure.

Physically too, it’s very hard for a woman to allow her hips to soften and open when the energy here is pulled so tight. Often vulvodynia and menstrual issues see remarkable improvements with healing here.

Physical Dysfunction of the solar plexus Chakra

This is the seat of the digestive system. The fire element fuels Agni and allows metabolism to take place.

Expect hernias, heart burn, IBS, Crohn’s disease, indigestion, stomach ulcers, intestinal tumours, pancreatitis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, adrenal imbalances, colon diseases and arthritis,

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Solar plexus Chakra

The predominate lesson of the solar plexus chakra relates to how one feels the world sees us.

How strong is our identity? Unlike the other chakras, and particularly the upper ones, the solar plexus chakra has no connection to thought.

No logic, no reasoning, its power is entirely related to feeling.

More importantly it’s how we trust ourselves.

We even say, “listen to our gut”, don’t we?

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter responsible for our mood modulation (as well as many other things. It has around thirty different functions that we know of.)

Given this, you might consider it would be found in the brain, but in fact 90% of it is found in the gut. Manufactured and stored there, it governs how confident or anxious we feel and a massive bearing on how digestive functions fare.

Its development begins when a child is about 4 or 5, just as they begin to understand their actions have consequences. If they don’t get their own way, they throw tantrums, scream and shout.

How do the parents respond? Do they reward the kicking off? Do they reprimand the behaviour? If they do, then how?

Does the child start to understand that kind of behaviour is “not nice” and ultimately doesn’t get you very far in life, or do they get punished hard with little consideration to their feelings and opinions?

Do they feel safe expressing their distaste next time, or do they shy away from saying anything?

The main time of solar plexus development takes place during adolescence, as a person starts to become independent and develop a personality outside of his or her parent’s grasp.

It’s the first time many people have had to stand on their own two feet, and if it’s not successful it can set the scene for life.

Being so intimately involved with digestion, means of course, it rules the liver, the foreman of the body. The liver controls metabolism and assimilation of nutrients as well as other things, but also emotionally it moderates how we deal with authority.

Do we feel stressed and under pressure?

Are we confident enough to act with authority?

When we’re stressed, how do we deal with that?

If stress is not dealt with, it turns to frustration and anger – another of the liver’s friends.

We might see violent outbursts, but also repressed, these emotions invariably affect the digestive system, and often the pancreas too. Type 2 diabetes is the archetypal solar plexus illness.

Lastly this is the seat of will power, resilience and determination. Core strength, we could say. So, what secrets lie within the ten-petal symbolism of the yellow chakra?

Its name Manipuri, means city of jewels referring to how the ten prana and vayus congregate in the space. These energetic winds regulate energy transformation within the organism, each having its own direction, function and properties.

When they meet in harmony at the solar plexus centre, so kundalini can rise.

Here too, the lesson relates that ten states we must overcome to achieve mastery of this centre: foolishness, delusion, ignorance, jealousy, shame, disgust and treachery disturb this centre as do sadness, unchecked ambition and fear.

Just as in the root chakra, we see energy coming down from the cosmos, through the downward pointing triangle and then deflecting back out into the universe.

Solar Plexus Chakra Balance Vs Imbalance

solar plexus Chakra In Balance

This is the root of a charismatic leader.

Someone confident and who instils confidence in others. They are light airy and happy, laugh easily and are self-assured.

(Compare this to the leader with an over-active root chakra…)

It’s a scholar’s attitude of enjoyment of learning and eagerness to investigate the world, curious and full of hopeful expectation.

solar plexus Chakra ImBalance Symptoms

This person has no confidence in their own judgement. They fear making decisions and don’t feel capable of trying anything on their own. Whatever they do, they need someone there to hold their hand.

They develop complicated safety nets and security measures in every aspect of their lives because they develop a strange paranoia about being “found out” – presumably for being some kind of fraud – although sometimes that’s hard to discern, but more often than not become very cagey about their private lives.

Lastly, on one occasion I saw an underactive solar plexus energy manifested in an extremely sinister manner, where one person seemed to “create” alternate identities as an avoidance mechanism for being alone.

Over-active, as you can imagine, makes people overly critical, negative, surly and frankly not very pleasant to be around.

Physical Dysfunction of the Heart Chakra

Heart, lungs, chest, breast, arms, upper back, shoulders, vagus nerve, circulatory system - so think heart failure/disease, asthma, allergies, respiratory issues, high blood pressure.

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is related to love, joy, compassion and generosity, a dedication to oneness through diversity.

More than any of the chakra symbols, anahata is the most eloquent.

Its colour is green (although sometimes you can perceive the heart chakra is pink, when it also transmits the healing energy of chakra 13). Green is the colour of life and depicts an interwoven community connected through energy.

Its twelve petals reveal two schools of wisdom: those states we need to overcome and these we can strive towards.

Incompetence, discrimination, partiality, defiance and longing all impede its flow. Inability to hope or repent for the wrong doings we inflict upon others will cause dysfunction. Finally, lustfulness and being a fraud both work against the serene energy of love.

Anxiety draws us away from its essence, just as it does when we lose hope or indeed, we become arrogant.

For its greatest healing, we should seek to engender harmony, empathy, clarity, unity, forgiveness and compassion.

Its essence lies in unity, purity, kindness and peace. Achieving all of these, we experience the sensation of the heart chakra as bliss.

Even its name is peaceful. Anahata means unbeaten, unstruck and unhurt and its tone is the sound made without striking two parts of the mouth together.

Amongst the twelve petals, we clearly see a hexagram created by placing one triangle on top of another. The Hindus call this symbol Shaktona, the immaculate union between male and female.

Finally, the Anahata symbolises the place where the heart chakra lives. Above are three spiritual chakras and below reside the three physical ones. Here, it acts as a gateway for human consciousness to spill out and manifest in the physical world.

Physical Dysfunction of the Throat Chakra

Throat, vocal chords, trachea, neck, mouth, teeth, gums, esophagus, shoulders, arms, hands, hypothalamus

As you would imagine of the throat chakra, sore throats are a very strong physical indicator of disturbance here, as too are coughs. They are often an indicator that someone doesn’t feel safe saying something and often, they themselves make no connection to the issue at hand.

When someone loses their voice it's a complete giveaway to issues here.

One of my own patients came to me with a cough that had lasted for over three years. Despite seeing myriad doctors and specialists, no-one seemed to be able to find a cause.

She, herself, after reading my book on bronchitis had decided it must have an emotional undercurrent but suspected that it may have been from years of biting her tongue around her feelings about her sister’s marriage.

As an outsider, it was easy to see she felt disappointed in the house she and her husband had chosen. She spoke of it with hatred but didn’t feel it was something she could tell her man.

Over time, situations demanded they move to a new house, and by then her work with her oils (in particular, sweet basil) had brought the issues into her eye-line and given her a chance to consider them.

She moved to a cottage in a village she adored and within weeks the cough shifted and thus far has never returned.

Other possible signs you might expect to see are a stiff neck and perpetual colds. Thyroid issues often improve when you spend time working here.

Other areas of the body that are controlled and connected by the throat chakra are the parathyroid, neck, shoulders, arms and hands... external limbs that reach out into the world, I guess to hug.

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Throat Chakra

In medical astrology, the throat chakra relates to mercury, the planet of communication. This is the seat of anything that relates to communication and expression.

The main lesson of the throat chakra comes through the personality that we show to the world. Expression comes in two ways. How we speak to other people and how we convey what our thoughts and values are, but also how we dress and wear our hair.

Naturally, this also means creativity, the colour and vibrancy that we portray to the world.

This is the chakra of inspiration and whilst it does translate as making time to tinker with a motor bike or doing some embroidery, more, it’s the parts you choose for the bike, and the colours and stitches you choose for the thread. It's the ideas made manifest and transmitted to the world.

This sort of expression requires confidence. Not only do you have to believe you can do it, but then you have to be brave enough to unveil your ideas to the world.

That moment when you say,” look what went on in my mind” is a very naked one. You are exposed.

The throat chakra conveys the wisdom that ultimately, we have our own free will to be exactly who we want to be. With that freedom, comes the responsibility to speak kindly.

It teaches us that the way that we connect with other people, and in fact the universe at large, is no-on else’s choice but our own.

Now, Mercury is the Master of Communication.

He rules information, data and what we do with it. He not only rules swift intellect but also manual dexterity, so again that’s tiny nuts and bolts for the mechanic, and intricate stitchery for the seamstress.

All these also apply to the throat chakra... interestingly too, mercury's colour is blue.

But Mercury has a higher octave, which is Neptune which could, by extension, be construed as the darker side of the throat chakra.

Neptune rules deception, misdirection. It has links with addiction, with hallucinogenic drugs and foggy thinking and with the misfits of society.

When the throat chakra distorts, we see all these connections playing out. Likewise, in its upside, Neptune is the glamorous film star, the charismatic leader, and most certainly the powerful individual.

Energetics

Within the 16 petals of the blue chakra we should contemplate the kalas of Lord Vishnu.

  • As Purna Avatar, bestows divinity on all aspects of beauty in the worlds.
  • Compassion (Daya), Patience (Dharjya) Forgiveness (Kshama)
  • Justice (Nyaya) Impartiality (Nirapeksha) Detachment (Niraskata)
  • Meditation and Spiritual Powers (Tapasya) Invincibility (Aparchitta)
  • Beneficence and abundance (Danasheel),
  • Beauty Incarnate (Saundarjyamaya) Best of Dancers (Nrityajna),
  • Best of Singers (Sangitajna), Embodiment of Honesty (Neetibadi),
  • Truth Itself (Satyabadi)
  • Perfect master of all arts, such as poetry, drama, painting etc. (Sarvagnata) Controller of All (Sarvaniyanta)

Also eyes and ears issues such as mild vision problems to blindness, mild hearing issues to deafness.

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Brow Chakra

The brow chakra or third eye governs wisdom and perhaps what we might describe as the seer. It’s the part of us that hears things in the silence and sees things that are seemingly not there.

It’s the root of psychic abilities.

Power in this chakra grows and gathers momentum through many incarnations. The older the soul, the wiser they are.

This can also be seen developing through this lifetime. The old crone sees far more than the fair maiden and gains insights from her experiences.

A balanced and vibrant brow chakra brings forth charismatic leaders, great visionaries and healers.

The Sanskrit name of the chakra – Ajna – means command. A sign that we now have insights into our wisdom and knowledge and possess the ability to discriminate.

The thoughts residing here are conceptual, intellectual and abstract. For the first time, here we begin to experience spirituality through direct experience.

Indigo is the colour of royalty, of mystery and faith, and instructs us that knowledge found here goes beyond ordinary, it exists outside of our traditional knowledge state, and rests further than our regular time perception.

Just two petals are found in the symbology of this chakra, one for the Self, one for God. Facing one another, but not yet unified.

In the same way, it could be seen to portray the two sides of the brain and also the parts of the pituitary gland, which it also rules.

Brow Chakra Balance Vs Imbalance

Brow Chakra In Balance

When we see a very energetic crown chakra, it betrays a person who is "Master of Him/HerSelf".

They are intuitive, astute, wise but also a creative and strategic thinker.

There's an abundance of spiritual energy, keen perception and the wisdom about how to execute a plan with cunning.

Think Confucius or Sun Tzu.

Brow Chakra ImBalance

Problems in the brow chakra might be as insignificant as forgetfulness or seeming to space out now and them, but they can intensify to all consuming jealousy, slyness and spite.

You might also find an utter rejection of spirituality and intuition with the only focus and acceptance being on what we refer to as our physical reality (what they can see in the real world).

Imbalance in this area can often directly screw with the sacral chakra (pun intended!) because of the correlating pituitary gland and its effects on sexuality.

Crystals to Heal And Balance the Brow Chakra

Amethyst, Blue Quartz, Azurite, Charoite, Kyanite, Lapis Lazuli, Lepidolite, Purple Fluorite, Sodalite, Sugilite, Sapphire, Tanzanite.

Perhaps soak your crystals overnight in a class of distilled, or even better spring water, to create crystal elixirs. Drinking the beverage next morning really pours in the strange cosmic energy that the minerals have brought up from the ground.

General note on using essential oils and crystals together.

Feelings, Energetics and Mentality of the Crown Chakra

For most of us, this will be spirituality at the highest level, connection to the godhead and the divine. To God (or your equivalent belief), if you like.

This is the chakra that helps you to connect with the Godhead, be that Yahweh, Buddha, Shiva, The Universe... whomever you construe the superior being to be. It is a connection with the cosmos, to universal love and the creator.

The white of the crown encapsulates all colours of the other chakra, its light undisturbed and pure. Its name Sahasara means “a thousand” or “infinite”, denoting the large number of petals reaching out into the universe and connecting us to the ethereal web of existence.

In its serene open state, sahasara represents the full blossoming of consciousness. Some believe we have the freedom to experience these third dimensional chakras as we wish. They belong to this physical body and this lifetime, and form the greatest connection to our inner self, that part that perhaps only we will ever know.

For a small number of seekers though, that will not be enough. They will wish to transcend this physical experience and branch out from this three-dimensional body and experience more through different times, spaces and realities.

Whilst these states can only be accessed through the outer chakras, the gateways will remain closed until complete mastery of the emotional, mental and physical bodies have been achieved through control of all the third dimensional chakras from root to crown.

Here resides our spiritual nature. Only through consistent attention both to how we interact with the universe at large, and learning to listen, hear and integrate the messages, can we hope to attain access to the outer worlds.

Crown Chakra Balance Vs Imbalance

Crown Chakra In Balance

The ultimate lessons of the crown chakra are empathy and compassion. How do you learn to feel what someone is feeling, and communicate your sorrow for their heartache?

You have a deep understanding that everything is connected and the energy of the Universe resides in all living things. You know we are more than our physical body.

Crown Chakra ImBalance

But very few of us will achieve crown chakra all the time. Oftentimes, we are disengaged from seeing other people’s worlds, are self-interested or even bored by other people’s stories. More so, a crown chakra imbalanced will lose their connection to the Divine, feeling lost and confused in the journey of life.

This is the crown chakra closed or at least severely imbalanced.

Opening it, opens us to feeling more connected to the Divine and vulnerable to other people’s sorrow. It’s a brave and generous thing to give yourself over to someone else’s pain.

On the obverse, we can perhaps all visualise the healer in her floaty skirt, unwashed hair, trying to lay her hands on everyone then going back home to her squalid hovel.

The crown chakra left wide open to the universe rarely has a healthy root chakra; there are no roots, no grounding and zero practicality.

How To Identify Misaligned Or Imbalanced Chakras

Before we move on to the outer Chakras, let’s focus on discerning these and how we can start to realign the chakras which have gone astray.

1. The first thing you need is a pendulum

  • Whilst it’s lovely to have a gemstone set in silver with a pointy end, the truth is that’s not needed. In fact, I was taught to do it with first with a bath plug then with a bit of chewing gum on a string!
  • All you need is a bit of string with a weight hanging on the end of it.
  • For many people the easiest thing to find is a wedding ring on a neck chain. Perfect.

2. Next, it’s useful to have some sort of diagram to draw upon.

  • It could be just a line to work along, but I find it easier to have a very plain makeshift picture of a person. Mine is just an outline, but it means I can mark on where I have found the chakra, the kind of shape it presents as, and its power.

Now, I shouldn’t really use the word patient, but it is easier than keeping on saying “the other person” so “patient”, it is for the purposes of this guide.

3. Lie your patient on the floor

  • Or better still on a massage couch, and wait until they have had chance to relax.
  • First, we are going to discern the energetic fields to get a good connection with who this person might be.

4. Start by standing at their side, facing their head and place your hands at the top of their face.

Now, we are going to stroke down the electromagnetic field that exists between the physical body and the aura.

5. With a firm pair of hands, sweep right down the entirety of the body from head to toes, and visualise any negative energy being pulled away from their feet.

6. Flick it off your hands.

7. Do this six or seven times so you have stroked the field right across the body.

8. Now, hover your hands over them about a foot away

  • See if you can discern where the densest part of the aura comes to.
  • You might be able to perceive a kind of energetic boundary of tingling under your fingers.
  • There is only one type of person who can successfully do this and that’s the one who believes she/he can. The second you doubt it, the sensation will be lost.

9. OK, now the chakras.

  • Start at the feet.
  • Now, even though the root chakra is at the hips, it might be you can perceive chakra 0. No-one really understands what this one does but the pendulum seems to detect it quite easily.
  • Just hang the pendulum over the feet. Ideally, if you can, hang it with as little swing as you can.
  • When it passes across a chakra, the energy of the vortex will move it.
  • You’ll find it will draw the chakra for you.
  • Don’t worry if you can’t find chakra zero, head up the body.
  • Likewise, don’t worry if you can find some and not others. If one seems very quiet, check your notes. Do any of the physical or emotional correlations seem to fit with it being underactive?
  • Clearly, it’s exciting to find an overactive one, because it swings vehemently.
  • The issue then, is whether it is correct velocity or not. What does balance look like?
  • I use a diagram of a semi-circle cut into two. Although, what we really have is two right angles, and thus 90 degrees either side of the line. I have also drawn lines to delineate 10, 20, 30% etc.
  • Then the other side says -10, -20, -30 and obviously the line then relates to 0 which is normal function.
  • If in doubt hover the pendulum over the chart and ask it to show you what rate it is working at, with balance being zero.
  • It’s very strange how it works, but it does, and it will give you a clear indication of which one is doing what.
    • Incidentally, I guess the mathematicians would say we should add up to 7 chakras worth of 100% when we are in balance. I’ve never seen that happen. I can’t give an explanation why.
  • If you want to be very detailed, grab yourself a set of felt tips or a lovely big set of coloured pencils and put your finger on each colour in turn.
    • “Show me the colour of the throat chakra” and work along till you find the hue. Hopefully, if you’ve done it right that will come out a shade of blue!
    • That said though, if the chakra is dysfunctional it will wander off the scale so it might look more turquoise-y or a grey-ey blue
    • Bright and vibrant…. Good.
    • Off colour…Not so good.

How To Align The Chakras

Are any of them in the wrong place (following your physical work detailed above)? Perhaps they seem too high or low along the spine, or they are off centre…

Visualise them as a ball of energy – put your hands behind them and push.

It’s very weird. You’ll perceive that you might need to stop because they are too heavy and you need to take a second, third or fourth push.

Persevere until you think you might be right and check it with your pendulum again.

Aligning your own chakras

It’s not quite so easy to check your own chakras with a pendulum, but you can do it using your pendulum over your picture.

“Show me the location of my root chakra”… then carefully work over the picture.

You might find it easier to start by drawing a grid over the picture then asking, “Is it in this square?”

“Draw its shape please.”

“Show me its colour.”

“What is its velocity?”

---

Balancing The chakras

What’s your chosen tool of trade?

Actually, mine is a singing bowl (We have collected antique Tibetan Singing Bowls for several generations), but essential oils or crystals will do an excellent job too and can be used together with a singing bowl.

Place the crystal on the chakra spot, (ideally with your essential oil blend) and then, stand at the head and lay on your hands.

Be careful to go into this with the right mindset. You are not giving them your energy; you are acting like a radio transmitter from the sun.

Imagine your crown chakra opening and golden light passing down into your head, flowing through your heart, and out through your hands.

---

Psychic Protection

It’s vitally important when you are doing this kind of work, as a therapist, or on yourself that you protect yourself every time you meditate or doing any clearing work.

How to create psychic protection

Close your eyes and visualise a while light spurting out of the top of your head and then let it flow all around you, down the front, the back and the sides until you are completely cocooned in a white bubble.

Do this six times.

When you finish the work, imagine golden rain cascading over the bubble and washing it completely clean.

Lastly, when you’ve finished any chakra work, see yourself stepping into a giant banana skin, and then zipping it right up around you, so nothing can get in and none of the energy work you have captured can leak out.

Clearly, it’s not the banana skin itself that’s important but the intention to close yourself back off from the spiritual realms and continue your day in this third-dimension reality.

---

Chakra Meditation

All healing work must begin and end with psychic protection, and it must be very deliberate.

If you want an example of do as I say not as I do, I neglected to close down my chakras during a long day of writing this post. I’d been imagining hopping in and out of the outer chakras to check what I’d written, hadn’t really considered it like meditation (which of course it was, just in another form) and had simply gone and made the tea.

My sleep was disturbed for three days.

I call it downloading…where my brain hops in and out of books I’ve read, conversations I’ve had and scans to work out where I need to take a piece of work next.

In and out of Akashic records, ugh…not pleasant and a stupid, stupid mistake.

Incidentally, if this does happen to you, use valerian and hop the next night to shut off your mind.

It’s like being given an anaesthetic. You will have a black hole where your dreams were the night before, but at least you’ll have slept. These essential oils are fabulous, but many don't like the aroma. If this is you, the pharmacist will usually be able to sell it to you in tablet form for a couple of pounds.

But, if you want to stay calm and well, heed the warning, always open and close down properly.

Now, hopefully, also you will have grasped the futility of balancing just one chakra, because it is highly unlikely one problem exists in isolation.

Other chakras overact to compensate for underdeveloped ones etc etc.

So, the most effective chakra meditation you can do is a simple run up and down the colours. I do seven, but if you get clever, or course you can integrate the outer chakras too, as you develop.

  • Sit or lie thoughtfully.
  • The most effective position is to be cross legged on the floor, but you could also sit in a high-backed chair or lie on the bed.
  • It’s important you find a way to have a straight spine and that your root chakra has contact with something solid to ground you. Ideally you will be sat on the floor or a cushion or will have contact with the floor through your back if you are lying down.
  • Start by bringing your attention to breath, so create a slow deliberate rhythmic cycle.
    • I teach my patients two different ways, so they can choose which works best for them.
    • Either, breathe in a “square”…in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2
    • Or breathe in for 4, out for 8. (I find this one easier than holding my breath with empty lungs!)
    • It will take about 8 rounds for your lungs to pick up the rhythm and start to be automatic.
    • Ideally, you’d continue with that pattern throughout your chakra work, but it’s difficult to focus on more than one thing at once, so if you find you need to change to simple deep breathing when you do your “lights” that’s fine too.
  • Now, slowly, one by one, see the lights appearing.
    • A red light at the base….
    • Watch it. Observe it. Focus on it. Try to make it brighter, larger, rounder and more vibrant.
    • Know they misbehave, especially if you haven’t meditated before. They move, and change colour.
    • Don’t get frustrated. Accept it, and gently relocate it and change it back to red.
  • When you feel happy that the root has been vitalised, move up to orange.
    • Keep the red root chakra shining and allow the orange to sit above it.
    • Try and keep both colours correct.
    • If they play monkey mind, go back to the base, make it red, then do orange. That’s much easier than trying to change both at the same time.
  • Next, we’re adding the solar plexus, so we are going, red, orange, yellow…
  • Carry on up carefully, until you have seven beautiful colours with white above your head.
  • When you’re happy it’s steady, see the white light pouring out, surrounding you, and then proceed to clean off the aura (see above), and close yourself down.
  • A full chakra balancing usually takes around twenty minutes but a quick five minutes work, if you’re rushed, will be better than not doing it at all.

---

Laying out a Crystal Grid

If you manage to attain a good number of crystals, then a crystal grid will make you feel like you’ve never felt before and snaps chakras into place very quickly.

The sensation is very strange and other worldly, but it is a highly effective method.

It’s easier to grid someone else than it is to do it yourself, because it can feel like you’re trying to bury yourself in the sand on the beach, but with thought, it can be done.

  • Quartz crystal rods with pointed ends are your best friends here. You’ll need four small ones (like the ones you use as pendulums) for each chakra and then eight larger wands.
  • Place the eight large ones around the body, on the floor.
  • Place three down each side and one each at the head and feet. They should be like arrows pointing inwards towards the body.
  • Next starting at the root chakra, place your chakra crystal into its corresponding place on the body, then place the four quartz rods round it, pointing inwards to the chakra.
  • Work up the body, placing the sacral, with its four rods, then the solar plexus etc.
  • Ideally, you’d do a chakra meditation like this, but you may find the crystals seem to completely wipe your mind.
  • It’s fine and completely normal. It’s doing its job. Just lie quietly and enjoy feeling as if you are floating in space.

The Outer Chakras:
8-15 (4th Dimensional) & 16-22 (5th Dimensional)

The Outer Chakras

Note: To fully receive the energy from the outer dimensional chakras, you should first ensure your 3rd dimensional chakras are activated. The meditation videos chosen to help access the outer chakras, use bineural beats which are designed to be listened to with headphone. The aim of them is to try and help your brain tune in to a higher frequency to assist you in accessing the outer chakras.

Some basic physics is required to start to understand the outer chakras.

They are thought to connect us to the fourth and fifth dimensions, but to laypeople like us, what in Heaven’s name are these?

Let’s start with this because, once we grasp this, they become easier to perceive.

---

Understanding the Dimensions

The first seven chakras are generally accepted to exist in the third dimension and as three dimensional beings, we find these the easiest to perceive and experience.

Let’s explain 3D a little.

First, exists the Zero-Dimension. It’s a solitary point. It possesses no length, height or any depth. Really, it’s little more than a piece of information: off or on, or indeed point or no point.

But if we grouped together an infinity of such zero dimension (0D) points, we’d create a line.

We’ve created 1-Dimension.

Put simply: 1 dimension (1D) is a group of every possible point existing along that line.

Bored? Yep, I know. It’s physics. But stay with me, because soon, this line is going to bend your mind.

So next, let’s group together another infinity. This this time though, we are going to group the 1 dimension lines.

We’ve created a plane.

2-Dimensional could be considered like a chess board, that is: a set of every possible line on a plane.

Right now, let’s do it again. Let’s stack all the 2D planes.

Together they stack up to make a space, don’t they? 3D is a description of all planes in a space.

So, this shouldn’t be too difficult to visualise, because we live in a 3d space, don’t we?

But 4D…?!

Based on Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, the 4th dimension appears when we group together all possible 3D space together.

We’d recognise this as Space-Time, or History. It’s a collection of every possible position found along a timeline.

We need to consider of course, that this is “relative” (as in relativity) because everyone’s experience is different and indeed even our own perception of time could alter from day to day, or even moment to moment.

I have different memories to you, and even the perception of my memory of reading this post will be different to yours.

Theoretically, if we now agree that 4th dimension is time, and therefore history, if we grouped together infinite numbers of histories, then physics dictates then there must be many different realities, all lining up.

Some people speculate that many versions of us exist in many realities. This makes senses if you consider that our realities are always based on decisions we make.

We settle upon a decision, take action and that dictates the path that takes us forwards.

Now we are in the realms of Sci-Fi, aren’t we?

But, in reality, the 5th dimension can, at least partly, be proven both mathematically and with quantum physics by something called Calabi-Yau manifolds, shapes that satisfy the requirement of space for the six "unseen" spatial dimensions of string theory.

Since the dimensions have not yet been detected, it’s thought they could possibly exist in far smaller states than we are able to currently observe. This is currently one of the hottest areas of research existing in mathematics and physics.

Just to bend your mind one more time before we head back to our lotus flower energies, consider for a moment then, grouping all possible realities then….

Your reality merges with your parent’s reality, your siblings, children’s, friends and any other person you or they may come into connection with. For a moment, try to envision what this 6d plane looks like.

An intricate and beautiful web of connectedness, all reaching out, entwining and impacting upon each other.

Whilst it is unlikely actual beings exist in these other dimensions, it’s highly likely they are chock full of information.

Some scholars posited that the existence of a sixth dimension might explain some of the phenomena we find beyond our reach. One example might be the people born who also have savant capabilities, especially in the arts and mathematics.

Might it be that seers, oracles and savants are somehow tapping into data leaking from other dimensions?

If that’s true, it could be because their third-dimension chakras come into alignment, and open their fourth or even fifth ones without any particular work and they are able to read the information being made available to them.

One final point, before we move on…

At the beginning, when we were talking about how a chakra might dysfunction, I said the chakra was spiral, and we might perceive it as a cone.

However, it’s likely our three-dimensional reality only allows us to perceive it that way. In the same way, we are only aware of one concrete 4D entity, which is a black hole.

Because we exist in a 3d reality, we can only perceive a slice across the plane of it, so we see it as a spiral, but extensive research shows it is more likely to be spherical. I suspect the same might apply to the chakras, but how you’d prove that, I have no idea!

Ok, from that enormous and glorious vision of the universe in all its marvellous possibilities, let’s come back into our bodies and draw that love back with us through the crown chakra.

You may become aware of yet more energy above it? If so, it could be you just opened your perception to the outer chakras, potentially chakras 8 and 9.

Let’s go back to our original statement then:

Chakras 8-15 pertain to how we can impact our existence in the Fourth Dimension, that is space and time and Chakras 16-22 are thought to operate upon how we can interact on events and circumstances that may be possibilities with other realities.

We are entering into the shamanic vibrations now. Leaving behind the concerns of the physical body, we are entering a space where we exist as timeless light.

Since there is no longer a connection in the third dimension, the relationship with the physical body weakens and we no longer sense the connection with the endocrine glands when we work with the outer chakras.

Below is a guided meditation / group immersion on accessing your higher chakras

It's highly unlikely you will access your higher chakras from this but it might help serve as a good introduction and help you to frame your mind as you try to activate and work with the outer chakras.

Chakra 8: Higher Heart

As we enter the fourth dimension, of time space, this is the first time we have access to the timeless nature of the soul.

The seat of the soul is thought to be found in chakra 8. You may be able to discern it about a foot above the head.

Different from the spirit (which is thought to reside in the aura) the soul is believed to be the part of you re-incarnated through many lifetimes.

For many, we spend our time on a quest to learn our purpose in life. Perhaps through, if we are invested in accessing our more spiritual realms, freeing our soul matrix might be a more successful endeavour.

Each individual consciousness originates from the Eternal God source but carries a completely unique code, which encodes our individual purpose.

During a successful lifetime we learn, evolve and experience as many opportunities as we can to understand what might make up our own soul blueprint.

Natural abilities, likes, dislikes, creed colour...they are all clues.

In its fullest expression it encompasses a triptych of our creative imagination, how receptive we are to new experiences and wisdom and our perception of what life is like.

The soul acts as a repository for all knowledge and experience gained through its many incarnations and records the memories of the consciousness.

In Shamanic teachings, this chakra is known as the Soul Star.

Essential Oils For Chakra 8

The main oil I use for this chakra is Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica)

Astrologically, angelica is ruled by the cusp of Pisces and Aries, the moment marks the change over from one lifetime to the next, whether that be the end of the zodiac year or in our own incarnations.

It’s a very valuable oil for hospice situations and perhaps that’s because it enables them to summon the will of the carpenter to dispose of his creation.

An exercise To Help Open Chakra 8

In the below video, master healer Deborah King shows you a simple technique to help open and connect chakra 8:

MEDITATION For The 8th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 8th chakra:

Chakra 9: Atomic Doorway

It draws together the entirety of the values of the seven chakras of the third dimension, encompassing a blueprint that makes up you at any given time. You can usually find this about 8-10 inches above 8.

Activating all the skills encapsulated in the crown chakra, it overlays that person with all the acquired skills that have been left behind by the residual karmic experience.

Seeing auras, telepathy, hearing plants, lucid dreaming and out of body travelling, any of which may have been learned and stored from other lifetimes.

This is the gateway to other universes, to the Akashic records of everything that ever was and will be, and to one’s spirit guides.

This is where truth lives. Absolute truth unsullied by perception, agenda or ego.

Chakra 9 acts like a transformer drawing information from the plant world and siphoning it down through the crown. It is through this chakra that rather than simply feeling a sense of community with one's fellow man, we start to acknowledge that other forms of life might be useful allies too.

Essential Oils For Chakra 9

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens). The Latin name semper always virens living, betrays a strange bonding between life and death.

The Ancient Greek god Asclepius was thought to have had cypress all around his clinic. These trees also grow in cemeteries because they have such an affinity with death and the thin veil that exists between the living and the dead.

Physically, cypress is a detoxifier and I find this oil seems to help skills from past lifetimes rise to the top.

MEDITATION For The 9th Chakra

Chakra 10: Solar Star

Eight and nine climbed above our heads but ten is found below the feet.

Work downwards from chakra 0, about a foot and you may be able discern this chakra.

In someone new to the spiritual pathway, the disturbance in your pendulum will be small, but as they work on their psychic abilities you will no doubt see the power begin to increase. Clearly, working this area will also help to accelerate their abilities.

As the fourth-dimension chakras begin to activate, they will eventually take the place of those in the third dimension. In other words, we begin to operate at a higher vibration.

Should ten begin to open, a person begins to be able to use and control the residual karmic skills they "remembered" from other incarnations, like seeing auras or telepathy for instance.

They have accessed the data and integrated it, but the on switch cannot be executed until the male and female energies have been completely aligned.

It's useful to remember that the even number chakras will activate skills housed in the odd ones.

That means if there is some trauma locked in 9, it won’t be until you have fully integrated that part of your journey, and activated 10, that you will be able to access it to try to heal it. The roads are just not in place to get there.

To move forward from 9 to 10 demands careful work on the active masculine element with the passive female, and this can only happen if the heart chakra in the third dimensional chakras is entirely balanced.

Essential Oils For Chakra 10

  • Galbanum (Ferula glbaniflua)
  • Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea)
  • Narcissus (Narcissus poeticus)

The ancient Egyptians used galbanum in incenses dedicated their god Osiris, the god of the underworld and the quintessential masculine element.

Overcoming and conquering death, galbanum draws us down into the underworld of our soul path. Where it meets with Blue Lotus by contrast consecrated to the goddess Isis.

Merging masculine and feminine allows us to descend past the confines of this lifetime and integrate the lessons of the soul.

Narcissus, a particularly unpleasant oil to use topically, has a fragrance that leads us to the other side of the mirror. We are able to dispassionately assess which parts of us have been acquired through this lifetime and might be discarded and those which belong to a far bigger plan.

Once identified, we are better placed to liberate the soul matrix and work out how these qualities can better serve this lifetime.

I’d only use narcissus in a diffuser. It’s not an oil you want on your body.

MEDITATION For The 10th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 10th chakra:

Chakra 11: Galactic

Chakras eleven and twelve are located the palms of the hands.

Chakra 11 corresponds to the solar plexus chakra in the third dimension of identity and worthiness and is part of the shamanic skills of moving outside of time and space, telekinesis or instantaneous precipitation of thoughts.

The information was encoded at ten, and through practice this chakra can make this manifest, but again, the solar plexus chakra holds the on and off switch.

It is through this chakra we can diminish the effects of past and present trauma. As we saw in the last polarity, a person will need to reach 12 to be able to heal disturbances at eleven.

Essential Oils For Chakra 11

  • Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
  • Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Another rather spiteful essential oil, thuja relies on its challenging chemistry of large amounts of thujone to bring about extraordinary effects.

Dr Malte Hozzel gives a wonderful lesson on the ketone chemical group, where he describes them as being disincarnators.

On a physical level, slightly more kindly oils such as hyssop, rely on ketones to break down substances…mucous, scar tissue etc. On a more spiritual level, though, the stronger ones are able to change the substance of reality into time.

Shamanically, we also see white sage being used in the same way. These oils cleanse and move energy like no other can.

MEDITATION For The 11th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 11th chakra:

Chakra 12: Earth Star

Connection with the monad - the part of us acting as observer.

Complete detachment, neutral assessment observation and impartial conclusions. Potentially, it may be this chakra that influenced the renaissance paintings of golden halos.

We can see how this might be a fundamental healing tool, where we can step outside of our emotions about an event and see how it could play out.

Essential Oils For Chakra 12

  • Hemp (Cannabis sativa)

This one is a strange one because you might expect the timeless nature of the plant to be encapsulated in the cannabinoids, but that is not so.

Leaving behind the THC and its pals, it is the terpenes that pass through distillation and work on an entirely different level.

Using hemp oil, takes you to a place where you become the observer. There you can view your own history dispassionately, and are able to objectively see the other person’s view point.

This oil connects of the Akashic records and allows you to view the entirety of history at will.

MEDITATION For The 12th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 12th chakra:

Or this meditation that aims to activate the first 12 chakras:

Chakra 13: Universal Mother (Earth Core)

This is located outside of the body, slightly outside of the body and about an arm’s length in front of it.

Unlike other chakras, this one cannot be blocked, but instead our awareness of it can.

It is unconditional love and joy. The symbol of this chakra is the rose, and its presence outside of the body explains why sometimes the green chakra can be construed as pink - in its highest vibration.

From the 13th chakra upwards is the connection to the higher self, so here, the veil between the spiritual realms and the physical body are at their thinnest. This chakra enables vibrational healing to take place. It opens our hearts and senses to hear the resonance of other beings and is especially useful for healing.

Essential Oils For Chakra 13

  • Holy Basil

The feminine counterpart to the masculine Sweet Basil, Holy Basil is the manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi. Her energy is entirely sattvic, pure, sublime and divine.

MEDITATION For The 13th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 13th chakra:

Chakra 14: Universal Sun

Disengages the mind and the ego and allows us to perceive the divine plan.

When chakra 14 activates we can see the connections and understand their synchronicity. We can say the difference of "I imagine" to "I know."

This is the first point of clairsentience in the fourth dimension and is the higher octave of the third eye in the third.

Standard literature suggests this chakra can only be activated if the brow chakra is balanced but I am not convinced this is right. I think if the third eye is jammed open information leaks through this and we see delusions, paranoia and hearing voices.

Personally, I think this chakra is controlled by the third eye, in that it enables us to switch it on and off at will.

Essential Oils For Chakra 14

  • Violet Leaf

Technically, not an essential oil, but an absolute. Any work with violet is special, set aside and unusual.

There used to be a violet resinoid that was just like staring into a crystal ball, but no-one seems to make that now. The leaf is gentle, more Christlike and feels like you are protected by nuns.

MEDITATION For The 14th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 14th chakra:

Chakra 15: Universal Father

The higher octave of the crown chakra, this is where begin to merge with the monad energy. We become something outside of ourselves, something part of a much larger reality.

This is the highest point I have ever seen someone work to. All chakras are working, and ascension will begin.

MEDITATION For The 15th Chakra

You might want to try this meditation for activating the 15th chakra:

Anything I write now is complete theoretical research and I have not seen! It's made easier by recalling what we know about the dimensions.

3D overlaid became outside of time and space, and now 4D translates into 5D as we say our soul as part of an infinity of many souls.

In other worlds, separate realities existing alongside each other.

In the third dimension the state of being is solid. In the fifth it's believed to be light.

These are the "worlds" of the ascended masters.

5th Dimensional: Chakras 16-22

Chakra 16

In this fifth dimension chakra, a decision needs to take place. This marks the gateway to ascension. Do you decide to stay living on this material plane or plan your ascent to merge with the one-ness.

Chakra 17

Unites the learning of the chakras in the fourth dimension and brings about an ability to sense everything that ever was and that which is yet to come.

Chakra 18

Exists in the sixth dimension and does not correlate with any of the preceding chakras in either the third or fourth dimension, but instead speaks to the Galactic Self.

This opens a portal, for those who use it, to channel information from the ascended masters back to our reality, should they choose to do so.

We are now in the realms of the Calabi-Yau manifolds with all its planes and holes. Where do the ascended masters hide and just how small is the reality that holds them in the sixth dimension?

Chakra 19

Connects us to Christ Consciousness of the Monad and we can remove all attachments in the third dimension that no longer serve us good.

Chakra 20

The twentieth chakra is related to the I AM. Your relationship with God now changes.

Until this point the divine seems elevated and superior but at chakra twenty you begin to understand you have a responsibility to co-rule with the godhead and to expand your communication through the brightness of light.

In the third dimension we need communicate through sound, but here sound becomes obsolete since all communication is sent as love.

Golden Violet

Chakra 21

Correlates in part to the third eye, but here rather than perceiving other realities you become part of the vision and knowing.

Chakra 22

Relates to the fifth-dimension crown chakra and it is here we find angels.

Wrapping Up

To summarise, I always use the chakras as the way into healing. They give the biggest clues to energetic deficiencies and themes going through the emotions and into the physical body.

So, there you have it! Thirty years of research.

Hopefully it’s helped you gain a better understanding of the chakras, how they work, how to work with them and how to balance and align the chakras to help you and your family achieve a healthy mind, body and soul as you move through the journey of life.

P.S If you’d like to read the book I quoted by the scientist at the beginning, my quotation was taken from:
